Junior Great Books, HEARTS Club, SCRIPT, Read- A- Plenty are just some of the special reading programs at our school. Students are
invited to read each school day. Our reading specialist, Mrs. Jane Falasz, has brought her love of reading to the students with these wonderful programs. Junior Great Books is a program for students in grade 1 to 6. Students meet once or twice a week to read classic works of literature. They develop critical thinking skills by playing word games such as anagrams, and solving thinking puzzles. HEARTS Club brings our newest readers and parish volunteers together once a week to read and enjoy stories and poetry. Read-A-Plenty encourages classrooms to work together to add up minutes spent reading each month. Winning classrooms enjoy a special treat to celebrate. |
Our latest addition is the Reader's Theatre program named SCRIPT. This program comes from Soul Gurgle, Inc. Rainbow Weldon is the director and a group of actors from the Chicago Kids Company meet with students after school once a week. Students experience the joy of reading and performing for others. The Fall Session ended with a performance for families and friends at The Portage Theatre. Another reading program at our school is provided by Title I services. Ms. Jennifer McLemore meets with students in small groups twice a week. She tells parents "My goal is to improve students' reading skills while building self-esteem through a positive learning environment." She encourages students by finding stories that are fun to read and playing games to build skills. Room 301 |
