The Native Americans, the first explorers and settlers, Rosa Parks, and Dr. King are just a few of the people we meet as we travel through our nation's history in our Social Studies classes. Teachers read books and novels to help history come alive in the classroom. Video clips from United Streaming help make the faraway places and people from our past seem closer.

In the primary grades, PreK to 3rd, students learn about the world we live in. Each month, holidays and special Americans are studied. Classes celebrate with song and food as they celebrate with a Thanksgiving Feast.

Our second graders continue to learn more about the United States. Students prepare state posters filled with facts about each state. Cultural heritage is important, too. Third graders prepare posters and presentations about their cultural heritage. They also celebrate student creativity with the annual Invention Convention.

Grades 4 and 5 study the United States. Fourth graders learn about the regions. They study the landforms, climate, and natural resources. This year the focus of the Junior Achievement Program is about the regional resources of the United States. Students also learn about the people of the region, past and present. Our 5th graders learn more about U. S. History. They learn about the Native Americans at different learning centers. They present skits about the signers of the Declaration of Independence and learn about the Civil War, too. The 6th grade class studies all the nations of the world. Some special projects include posters on South American countries and How to Bury a Pharaoh Instruction Manuals.

Our 7th and 8th graders study our nation's history. At this time, 7th grade is learning about the American Revolution. Students are working on Revolutionary War models. The 8th grade has just completed creating and displaying inventions. These inventions are on display in the 3rd floor hallway. Later in the school year, the 8th graders will study the U.S. Constitution. Along the way, they will learn some great facts about Chicago history, too!
