The students at St. Viator eat lunch in the lower level of the school, where the lunchroom is located. There are 3 lunch periods scheduled
in order to feed all the St. Viator students the prepackaged meals that arrive every morning. Every month the families order lunches for
their children in advance. The students' lunches are then ordered weekly by the school's food service staff, Alice Martinez and Carol
Evans, through Food Service Professional. Mrs. Martinez and Mrs. Evans are also the ones responsible for heating up the food and
making sure every child receives the lunch that they ordered everyday. Raising healthier children is a major issue among families and schools that is calling for more action to prevent obesity in children and promote healthy living. This year St. Viator adopted new |
nutritional guidelines to help parents feed their children healthier foods. Many children bring lunch from home, which sometimes include potato chips, candy or other foods that are not necessarily meeting the children's nutritional needs everyday. The nutrition guidelines were introduced to parents in order for them to be aware of how important a healthy lifestyle for their child is to St. Viator and also to give them suggestions of what alternatives they could pack in their child's lunch everyday. The preordered lunches are also healthier than years ago. There are more vegetables offered in lunches and whole wheat is being used more often as a substitute to regular white bread. Overall, the children seem to enjoy the food that they are eating for lunch and, with the new nutritional guidelines, they are living healthier lives as well. Room 103 |
