Kindergarten News: Miss Wright - Room 110
We have been very busy in kindergarten. Since November, we have been enjoying our guided reading books and learning sight words. We have learned how to write sentences and use periods and question marks. We also have spent a lot of time working with the alphabet and the sounds that all of the letters make. The kindergarteners have also learned word families (at, it, an, og, op), blends (sh, dr, fr, cl, fl, bl, tr, st) and rhyming words. We loved searching for and finding words we know in books.

In Religion we have learned so much in the new year. Most importantly we have learned about the life of Jesus. We have learned about how Jesus teaches and love others. We also learned how to be thankful for our families, friends and pets. During the Lent season we took part in learning about the station in the classroom and in church with our buddies.

In addition to working on our alphabet and words, we have been working on our numbers. Through cross-curricular lessons and activities we practice writing and identifying numbers to 20. We have also learned the following concepts: sorting and classifying, capacity, estimating, measuring, counting by fives and tens, penny, nickel, dime, telling time to the hour and half hour, addition, and subtraction. We are off and running with addition and subtraction and cannot wait to show off our skills in first grade!

In room 110 our minds have worked like mini scientists when it comes to science. We have enjoyed learning about magnets, weather, zoo animals, the weight of objects, sink and float, planting, celebrating Earth Day and the season of spring. The class learned how to make, test, and come up with a conclusion to their predictions. In the last month of school we discovered and observed the life cycle of a butterfly. The classroom watched our caterpillars grow very quickly, turn into the chrysalis, then emerge as butterflies.

The children watched as the painted lady butterflies come out and began to fly around. We had a blast with this unit. Highlights and field trips: The kindergartners went to the Kohl Children's Museum with our pre-school friends. Our class enjoyed taking walks around the neighborhood to observe the lovely season of spring, and to get exercise. We planted and grew flowers for Mother's day, enjoyed spending time with our sixth grade buddies and were read to by Gordon Tech students. Our final field trip was in May, at the Lincoln Park Zoo with friends and family members. The kindergarten class has learned and accomplished so much this year! They are ready to take all of their growth and knowledge to first grade!
