This has been a busy year for the seventh graders. In religion, the students have finally made their Confirmation. It was a very nice ceremony, and this group of candidates really got into the spirit of the sacrament. Father John complimented them on their knowledge and dedication while preparing. Also, during Lent we studied the last week of Jesus' life using the Bible and the music from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. In social studies, we have covered the American Revolution, the Constitution, slavery issues, and are currently competing in the yearly Civil War game. The students have been divided into two groups: half Union and half Confederate. The two sides have been competing against each other as they complete various activities related to the war. This will continue to the end of the year when they will compete in a final battle to test their knowledge of the Civil War. Congratulations to Joshua Hernandez who advanced to the state finals in the National Geographic Geography Bee this year. Although he did not advance, it was a great experience for him. He will be ready when he returns and wins it all next year.

![]() In math the seventh graders have been busy studying geometry concepts, the 4 operations with fractions, exponents, ration, proportions, and percents. Seventh graders focus of study was the Animal Kingdom beginning with the simplest invertebrate through the simplest vertebrates. They participated in a four-week scientific action research project determining if the pedagogy of traditional teaching or problem based learning improved learning and test scores. Ecological issues of life and the environment was used for this study. Both the 7th and 8th grade classes went on a field trip in March. We spent the day at Cantigny, the estate of Robert R. McCormick, former owner and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. While there, the students were able to tour the mansion, visit the First Division war museum, and climb on some vintage American tanks in the tank garden. Based on the comments from the students, they had a lot of fun and learned a thing or two also. |
