Metric Olympics

St. Viator Students Compete in an Olympics of their own.

St. Viator Students Compete in an Olympics of their own. Students in grades 5 and 6 celebrated the Olympics by competing in their own Olympic events during math class. The math skills covered included estimation, use of the calculator, finding metric measures of distance, weight, and liquid, as well as area and mean. Each team competed in various events including the paper plate discus, cotton ball shot put, and left handed-marble grab. The kids particularly enjoyed "Big Foot". In this event the Olympians estimated, then found, the area of their foot! Certificates were awarded to the winning country. The winning country had the lowest mean difference between their estimated scores and actual scores. Although these events may not seem as dangerous and exciting as the two man bobsled or half- pipe, a good time was had by all.
