COVID-19 Information Page

November 2020

Dear St. Viator families,

Reopening St. Viator Elementary School in August of 2020 was a successful and collective school community effort to bring our children back to school.  St. Viator prepared over the summer to safely welcome our students, both in person and remotely, with the support of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Office of Catholic Schools.  We focused on the health & safety of our building, staff, and students by attending to increased daily and weekly cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing.  We added additional janitorial staff to focus on frequently touched areas in our building and classrooms which has helped to keep everyone healthy.  Even our teachers have added cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing to their daily classroom routine; attending to student desks, light switches, pencil sharpeners, and door handles throughout the day.  Our attention to the health and safety of our school has resulted in very few cases of COVID-19 in our building.

Living under a pandemic has also called on us to be flexible in our approach to educating our students.  St. Viator is blessed to have professional teachers that are passionate about 21st century instruction and have led the way in remote teaching and learning.  Having prepared over the summer and fall of 2019, our teachers learned the intricacies of teaching over the Google Classroom learning management system; adding Google Meet and Zoom to bring live teaching to all of our students - even our preschoolers!  We went from in-person learning on March 12, 2020 to an entirely new platform of all-remote learning on March 16, 2020 and continued that through our last day of school on June 9, 2020.  There were many pieces put into place that made that transition successful, chief among them were our dedicated parents who supported their children at home under some pretty stressful circumstances.

Since August, many things have shifted and changed in education.  Our new normal has added EdTech tools, devices, learning management systems, virtual meetings, and our cohort model.  As we continue to pray for a vaccine and medicine to disrupt the spread of COVID-19, our St. Viator school community invites you to check in here for updates on our approach to teaching & learning, changes in our school calendar, and information shared from the Archdiocese of Chicago.  You are always welcome to call our office at 773-545-2173 with questions or concerns.  God bless you and may the Holy Spirit carry all of us in this difficult time.

Many blessings,

Mrs. Rieger
