St. Viator Builds Partnership with Loyola Academy

St. Viator is excited partner with Loyola Academy, a Catholic college preparatory high school located in Wilmette, Illinois, as a part of Loyola Academy's service ministry program.   As a beneficiary of this outreach program, St. Viator will welcome students from Loyola Academy into the classrooms several times this Spring where they will aid in daily lessons, leading students in small group work, special projects and mentoring.  We look forward to building a lasting partnership with Loyola Academy, which places a strong emphasis on community service, consistent with St. Viator's mission of teaching our students respect for all people and a commitment to Catholic social justice and peace.

Junior Achievement Day

On March 11, St. Viator students were converted into St. Viator business people as volunteers from Schurz High School brought Junior Achievement into our school. Junior Achievement of Chicago is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to introducing the free enterprise system into the classroom, sharing ideas about economic systems, and reinforcing the importance of staying in school.  The student-facilitators served as role models, sharing their knowledge of business and economics with younger children using an interdisciplinary approach involving social studies, math, reading and writing skills.  The program is a great resource for St. Viator, addressing many of the economics-based standards in the Social Studies curriculum in a fun, engaging manner!

Mrs. Johnson on mission trip to Nigeria

St. Viator 7th Grade home room & upper grades Math teacher, Mrs. Kathleen Johnson, was selected to be a part of a mission trip to visit Catholic Schools in Nsukka, Nigeria.  In 2006, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Nigeria dreamed of creating Catholic Schools to effectively educate students from pre-school through high school. A partnership between the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Nsukka was developed.  The partnership has contributed immense assistance in designing and building a foundation for Catholic Schools in Nsukka.  Mrs. Johnson has been a part of this committee and was invited to join the mission trip to Africa in February 2014 representing St. Viator.  She is travelling the last two weeks of February.  Since leaving for her trip, Mrs. Johnson has been communicating with St. Viator students through Skype and through the blog that was established between students of St. Viator and students in Nsukka.   To see the conversations, please visit http://nsukkaschools.blogspot.com.     We can't wait to hear about Mrs. Johnson's experiences upon her return!
